There were two community meetings for Fish Springs residents last week and both were very well attended. On Monday evening, Dec. 4, about 70 people met in the firehouse to discuss the master plan amendments in Fish Springs. The community gathered together and voiced their opinion against a proposed master plan zoning change that would increase the density of Fish Springs.
On Dec. 6, there was another large group of residents from Fish Springs at the county commissioners' meeting. After input from many residents, the county commissioners voted unanimously against the change in the master plan. It was democracy in action.
Each household in Fish Springs has its own well and septic system. The quantity and quality of water here was a big factor in the vote against the master plan amendment. In recent years the water table in Fish Springs has dropped 5-10 feet and it's not being replenished. Ruhenstroth and Johnson Lane already have higher nitrate levels from more septic systems and Fish Springs is beginning to show increases of nitrates also.
Our thanks to the county commissioners who upheld the master plan for Fish Springs and to all the residents who took time to get involved with this important matter.
In Sympathy: A very sad and strange coincidence recently happened here in Fish Springs. Don Hale and Doris Miller lived right next door to each other for more than 30 years. They died recently - just a day apart. Don passed away on Nov. 23 at age 78 and Doris, at age 71, on Nov. 24.
Our Fish Springs community is small in population but large in land. You really get to know your neighbors when you live next door to them for 30 or 37 years. There was a wonderful memorial service for Don on Dec. 2 at the Fish Springs firehouse. He was a "founding father" and 21-year member of the Fish Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Doris also had a memorial service at the firehouse on Dec. 9. Her deceased husband, Eldon Miller, was also a Fish Springs volunteer firefighter. She is survived by her son, Randy Bennett and daughter and son-in-law Jody and Bill Hutt and many grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy to them all.
