Thursday's approval of a $24.7 million redevelopment deal might be an early Christmas present for developers, but might also spark political trouble for the Douglas County commissioners who voted for it. There are rumblings of a recall out there, but this would be a difficult commission to turn out, since the 2004 election saw the largest voter participation in Douglas County history. Hopefully, whatever happens will at least wait until after the holidays.
The only guy to vote against the redevelopment deal, Dave Brady, will be sworn into office today, along with new commissioner Nancy McDermid and other constitutional officers. The ceremony's in District Judge Dave Gamble's chambers in the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center in Minden at 10 a.m..
Today a new generation begins to take the reins in Douglas County with the swearing in of Douglas High School Class of '81's Mark Jackson as district attorney.
The weather today comes to us from the Meneley Elementary School online weather station. The temperature in the Gardnerville Ranchos is 29 degrees with a light breeze out of the southwest. The school recorded .06 inches of rainfall on Thursday and another .01 so far this morning. According to the National Weather Service, today the skies will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of precipitation. The holiday weekend will see two more storms roll through, one on Saturday and the next on Christmas. Both are calling for rain in the Valley.
Today is also the last day of school in Douglas County for the winter break. Watch out for the kids on their new bikes in coming weeks.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a property damage accident at Highway 395 and Muller Lane at about 6:17 a.m. this morning. The roads were wet last night and there are parts of the Valley that may have frozen, so watch out for ice.
