The Douglas boys basketball team was able to overcome a tough trip over the mountains and a poor first half for a comeback 69-59 win over North Bakersfield, Calif., on Wednesday in the Clovis Christmas Tournament.
"We barely made it over the hill," Douglas coach Rob Streeter said. "We were a little road weary when we first got here.
"It completely looked that way (in the first half). We woke up in the third quarter."
The Tigers shot just 26 percent from the floor and were just 6-of-14 from the foul line as they trailed 33-26 at halftime. But Douglas took control when it outscored North 24-11 in the third quarter.
Michael Gransbery scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half. He also went 10-of-12 from the foul line, including 9-of-10 in the fourth quarter. Keith Olson added 18 points.
Douglas lost to Southern Section power Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, Calif., 77-69 in a second round championship bracket game at the Clovis (Calif.) Christmas Tournament Thursday.
The Tigers (8-5) led 18-16 after one quarter, but Notre Dame outscored Douglas 25-13 in the second quarter to take a 41-31 halftime lead and control of the game.
"We had a disappointing second quarter," Streeter said. "We just couldn't quite recover from that. Notre Dame's a very talented squad."
Olson had an outstanding game for Douglas with 36 points.
"Keith played extremely well," Streeter said. "He played hard."
Michael Gransbery added nine points.
