Sapp wins share of state title

Douglas High senior Holden Sapp breezed through the Tahoe Basin Ski League regular season, and stormed into the state championships with two impressive runs over the weekend.

He added a state title to his impressive resume Sunday, placing second on both days of the NIAA State High School Skiing Championships at Mount Rose Ski Resort to tie for the individual medal with Wooster's Matt Trabert.

Sapp turned in a combined time of more than a half-second faster than Trabert, but the state medals are awarded based on combined points, not time.

Trabert took first on Saturday, but came in third Sunday. Sapp's two second-place finishes left the two tied at 198 points.

This year's state meet marked the first time that the Nevada League combined with the Tahoe Basin League (to which Douglas belongs) in the championships.

The top two teams from the High Desert, Sierra and Tahoe Basin Leagues qualified for the team competition while the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams out of each league also advanced to the state meet.

Douglas had two female racers, Avery Carrig and Lauren Martin, qualify as well.

Carrig took 31st overall with times of 92.68 seconds and 80.77 seconds over the two-day meet.

Martin did not finish her first run but made a strong comeback the second day to take 37th.

In the team competition, the North Tahoe girls topped second-place Reno by 40 points. The Truckee girls took third, Galena finished fourth, McQueen took fifth and Carson took sixth.

North Tahoe's Jessie Poulsen and Reno's Melissa Slocumb tied for individual medal honors on the girls' side.

The Galena boys took first, Truckee took second, Reno finished third, Incline finished fourth, Wooster took fifth and Manogue took sixth.

Douglas was scheduled to compete in the regional championships Tuesday at Alpine Meadows.
