Longtime resident dies

Florence "Flo" Anderson-Abbott, longtime resident of Antelope Valley, died on Dec. 26, 2005, at the Evergreen Center, Gardnerville. Anderson-Abbott was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Medford, Mass., to Ralph and Laura Cutter. She grew up in nearby Arlington, Mass., graduating from Arlington High in 1937, while spending most of her summers on Long Beach Island near Gloucester. She met her future husband, Charles Anderson when she was 15. Six years later they were married on June 30, 1940. Florence and Charlie moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1954 and later settled in Walker, Calif., in Sept. 1968. After 41 years of marriage, Charlie passed away in 1981. "Flo" continued living in Walker, where she met and married Dale Abbott in 1997.

During World War II, Anderson-Abbott worked as a secretary, then later as a homemaker while raising her family. Anderson-Abbott dearly loved the mountains, all kinds of animals and gardening. She was very active in the Antelope Valley Methodist Church, supporting missions and taught Sunday school for many years. She had also been active in the past at the Walker Senior Center.

Anderson-Abbott is survived by her husband Dale Abbott, son Bruce Anderson of Nampa, Idaho, daughter Judi Roznos of Irvine, Calif., and daughter Linda Hansen of Medford, Ore., 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Community Methodist Church in Coleville.

Antelope Parent-Teacher Organization recycling

The Antelope Valley PTO would appreciate it if you would recycle your ink jet and laser toner cartridges and old cell phones by leaving them off at the Antelope Elementary School office. You can drop them off or pick up a prepaid envelope - whatever is easier for you. The proceeds from this ongoing recycling endeavor will benefit continuing projects for Antelope Elementary. Also, remember that the group collects other things such as Campbell's soup labels, various box tops, Tyson brands and Box Tops for Education.

Affordable housing issue to be discussed

At a meeting on Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Walker Community Building, Larry Johnston from the Mono County Planning Department will give a detailed presentation concerning long-term plans for affordable housing in Mono County. This is an important meeting for property owners to become informed and to also have their concerns addressed. Don't miss this opportunity to have your voice heard.

Antelope Valley artists' reception

On Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. there will be a reception to showcase the new art displayed at the Coleville Library. The Mono County Friends of the Library will also be in attendance to introduce the artists and to encourage increased library usage. Support your local artists and the library by stopping by.

New cell tower in Topaz

Nextel turned on the new tower last week, which is near Topaz Lodge. This will make for improved Nextel cell service to Antelope Valley. With the improved service you can now readily use your Nextel cell phone on the different lanes in the valley. In a few months another tower will be in service near the Marine housing for even better cell phone service. Many plans are available from Nextel and in the past local families here have taken part in the walkie-talkie option.
