Firefighters responded to Bing pit in the Gardnerville Ranchos on Thursday after a report of a fire in the nearby storage units turned out to be two empty buildings on the quarry property.

East Fork paramedic battalion chief Robert Lekumberry said 10 firefighters responded after dispatch received a call that a recreational vehicle was on fire at the storage units.

A plume of smoke over the Ranchos was visible in Carson Valley shortly after the noontime fire was reported.

The fire had been set by Bing employees as part of a controlled burn.

"They were in the process of demobilizing two buildings," Lekumberry said.

Lekumberry said workers at the pit had notified the East Fork fire district that there was to be a burn Thursday.

"They called in the burn but they didn't specify what they were going to burn," Lekumberry said.

Lekumberry said the pit operation had personnel on hand to monitor the fire and had a water tanker.

District firefighters left the employees to monitor the blaze.

"Bing had their own personnel and equipment on hand," he said.

Lekumberry said the East Fork Fire and Paramedic Districts' information will be turned over to the state fire marshal for further investigation.
