Heading into the finals of the Alhambra wrestling tournament, Douglas High trailed by only three points with four wrestlers set to compete for tourney titles.
As it was, each Tiger wrestler was pitted against a No. 1 seed in the weight class, and all four ended up taking silver medals after hard-fought title bouts as Douglas settled for second place overall in the 24-team tournament.
"We did really well, this was an extremely tough tournament," Douglas coach Lamont McCann said. "We had the lead early on in the day, but we lost quite a few kids in the semifinals. There was just some very good competition there and we did very well against it."
Shane Miller, Douglas' standout 189-pounder who brought a 38-0 record into the tournament, lost his first match of the season in the tournament finals against the No. 1 seed from Oakland, Calif. Even so, he still brought home the silver medal, as did Tigers Ryan Pruitt (152 pounds), Tony Ferris (160) and Sean Molina (171).
Jake Williams took home a bronze medal for the Tigers and Cameron Ames lost a tough semifinal match to the defending California state champion in the 140-pound bracket.
The Tigers travel to Wooster today and return home for the regular-season and home finale against Reno at 9 a.m. Saturday. It will be senior day for Douglas as the Tigers will say goodbye to Bryan Kaplan, Matt Castro, Ames and Miller.
