Digest: Ducks Unlimited to host benefit dinner

The Carson Valley chapter of Ducks Unlimited will host its 25th annual benefit drawing at Carson Valley Inn on Feb. 17.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Ticket prices are $75 for an individual, $300 for a sponsorship and $900 for a corporate table. The ticket includes a Ducks Unlimited membership, dinner, auctions and numerous drawings.

Spring Soccer tryouts

The Carson Valley Pirates U10, U12 boys' soccer team is looking for five more players. The traveling team will play in tournaments in March and April and the spring season runs through May.

Little League sign-ups

The final day for Little League sign-ups is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary School.

This is the only sign-up day left, no exceptions.

Cost is $55 for T-ball (ages 5-6), $65 for Minor B (6-7), $75 for Minor A through Major (6-12) and $100 for Junior/Senior (13-16).

Girls softball sign-ups

The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association is hosting sign-ups for the 2006 season at the Douglas Country Parks & Recreation annex building across from Lampe Park.

Sign-up dates include Feb. 7 (6-8 p.m.), Feb. 21 (6-8 p.m.) and March 4 (noon-3 p.m.)

Sign-up fees are $55 (ages 5-7), $60 (8 and older) and $130 maximum (family rate).

New players must bring copies of birth certificates.

Returning players should bring a completed registration form if you've already received them in the mail.

Wildcats seek new mats

The Douglas Wildcats youth wrestling club is raising money for club wrestling mats.

In 12 years, the Wildcats have placed more than 150 wrestlers finish in the top three at the state championships.

Each year, several wrestlers have qualified for regional and national competitions.

The club is in dire need of wrestling mats for the athletes to practice on and bring to competitions. The mats cost $9,000. Douglas also continually raises money for its wrestler scholarship fund, which assures that at least one less-fortunate participant is able to afford the program all the way to the state competition every year.

The club will be accepting monetary donations, as well as donations of products or services for a raffle through Jan. 31. Monetary donations will continue to be accepted after that date.

Adult volleyball registration

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is currently taking registration for spring adult volleyball teams.

The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 24. Registration is on a first-come basis, and the fee is $170 per team. Leagues being offered include a women's (6x6) Monday night league, a coed "A" (4x4) Tuesday night league, a men's (4x4) Tuesday night league, a coed "C" (6x6) Wednesday night league and a coed B (6x6) Thursday night league.

The leagues are scheduled to begin the week of March 6. A manager's meeting is scheduled for March 1 at 6 p.m. at the Recreation Annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane across from Lampe Park.

Adult coed soccer

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is currently taking registration for adult coed soccer. Registration runs through Feb. 24 and the $470 fee per team is due at the time of registration.

Games will be played on Sundays at Aspen Park. Season begins March 5, but all teams must have a representative present at the managers' meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Recreation Annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane. For more information, call 782-9828.

Youth volleyball registration

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will take registration for athletes in fifth-grade through eighth-grade through March 10.

The season begins on April 1. Games are played on Saturdays at Carson Valley Middle School and practices will run one evening every week.

Teams will be assigned through a paper draft system, which will take place Saturday, March 18.

The cost is $50 per child and includes eight games, a single-elimination tournament, uniforms and participation awards for all.

The department is also looking for volunteers to help coach these volleyball teams and sponsors to help keep the costs down for the children. For more information, call 782-9828.

Ten Star All-Star basketball camp

Applications are being evaluated for the Ten Star All-Star Summer Basketball Camp.

The camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison.

Players from 50 states and 18 countries attended the 2005 camp.

College basketball scholarships are available for players selected to the All-American team.

Camp locations include Commerce, Texas, Prescott, Ariz., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Sterling, Col., Bridgeport, Conn., Babson Park, Fla., Gainesville, Ga., Champaign, Ill., North Manchester, Ind., Towson, Ma. and Lebanon, Tenn.

CVI spring golf outing

The 17th annual Carson Valley Inn Spring Stag is April 27-30 with golf at the two Genoa Lakes courses: The Resort course on Friday and the Lakes course on Saturday.

A Thursday evening welcoming reception and Saturday night banquet provide plenty of time to visit and swap stories.

The 36-hole scramble is limited to the first 144 paid players. There are non-cash awards for the top finishers in each flight, drawing prizes, closest-to-the-hole prizes and a souvenir tournament shirt and hat for each participant.

There's also an optional early-bird round Thursday at the Lakes Course.

Head officials sought

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is currently looking for qualified individuals for two Umpires in Chief (UIC) positions for youth and adult basketball and adult softball.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting, training, scheduling, evaluating and paying officials for each sport. In addition, each UIC will work closely with the recreation coordinator in regards to the responsibilities previously listed.

High school certifications are recommended for basketball. Previous officiating is preferred.

Parks & Recreation seeking officials

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is currently looking for qualified officials for youth and adult sports in the following programs:

Youth basketball, $18 per game (Saturdays, January-March); Youth flag football, $12 per game (Saturdays, September-November); Youth volleyball, $14 per game (Saturdays, March-May); Adult volleyball, $16 per game (Monday-Thursday, fall, winter and spring); Adult basketball, $19 per game (Monday-Friday and tournaments in the summer and fall); Adult flag football, $18 per game (Sundays, winter).

Officials must be willing to work nights and weekends and have a flexible schedule. Most games last approximately one hour. High School certification is recommended for basketball and volleyball. Parks and Recreation will train and certify for all other sports.

Previous officiating and willingness to be trained in multiple sports is preferred.
