Plans for the 2006 Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride are in full swing and volunteers are needed for the event, which is Friday and Saturday in Alpine County.

Carson Valley Soccer Club tryouts

The Carson Valley Soccer Club will be holding tryouts for their fall competitive soccer teams for U12 boys, U14 boys and U13 girls.

The dates and times are as follows:

Boys: July 10 at 5 p.m. at Pinon Hills Elementary and July 15 at 1 p.m. at Pinon Hills Elementary.

Girls: July 11 at 6 p.m. at Lampe Park and July 20 at 6 p.m. at Lampe Park.

These are open tryouts that are available to any players regardless of ability or prior involvement. Players should arrive ready to play with cleats, shin guards, shorts, shirt and water.

Hockey Lake Tahoe set for July

The Hockey Lake Tahoe summer camp, instructed by NHL Hall-of-Famer Bryan Trottier will be at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena for the fifth year in a row this summer.

The camp for novice/intermediate players and goaltenders ages 5 through 15 will be July 11-13. Intermediate/advanced players ages 5-15 will go from July 10 to 15 and the novice/intermediate adult camp runs from July 12 to 14.

The camp is staffed with former pro and college players and coaches and is considered to be one of the top developmental camps in the Northern Nevada/Northern California area.

Local athletes will get a discount on registration.

Elements to hold tryouts

The Carson Valley Elements United U14 and U16 girls' soccer teams will host tryouts on July 12 and 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stodick Park and July 15 and 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at Stodick.

Tryouts are open to all girls between the ages of 12 and 15 interested in competitive soccer. For girls 14 to 15 this is an opportunity to play non-coed soccer and play and train with players with a single year age difference.

Wiffleball tournament upcoming

The second annual White Lightning Wiffleball Tournament is scheduled for July 22 and 23 at Stodick Park in Gardnerville.

The youth (6-12) and teen (13-17) divisions will play on July 22 and the adult division goes on July 23.

Cost is $100 per team with four to six players per team. The price includes team T-shirts and awards.

There is a four-game guarantee in pool play, which will determine seeding for the single-elimination tournament later in the day.

Volleyball clinics offered

The Capital City Volleyball Club will conduct several summer clinics and summer leagues for girls in grades 3 through 12.

All clinics and leagues will be at the Silver State Athletic Center, located at 5680 Morgan Mill Road in Carson City.

The seperate three-day clinics will be run by Capital City head coach Dan McLaughlin, whose high school team at Whittell had won four state championships and by four-time national championship coach Steve George.

The all skills clinic will be July 21-23.

The setters and hitters clinic will be July 28-30 and the "Get ready for varsity" clinic will be Aug. 4-6.

Times for each clinic are Fridays 5:30 to 8 p.m., Saturdays 9:30-3 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 3 p.m. Cost for each clinic is $75.

Capital City will also be organizing and conducting summer leagues with players divided into age/grade levels third-fifth, sixth-eighth and ninth-12th. Leagues will run two nights per week from July 5 to August 11. Cost is $75.

Douglas to host drug policy presentations

Douglas High School has scheduled two dates for the extra-curricular/co-curricular drug policy presentation for Aug. 1 and Aug. 8 in the Douglas High School commons at 6 p.m.

The presentation is mandatory for all new extra-curricular (athletes) and co-curricular (band, yearbook, skills, etc.) activities.

Attendance is mandatory with at least one parent or legal guardian and the student. Students not in attendance with at least one parent or guardian will not be allowed to try out or participate in the activity.

Carson Valley Junior Golf clinic

The Carson Valley Golf course has scheduled the second annual Junior Gold Summer Fun Clinic for Aug. 2 through 4.

Clinic sessions will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. each night and are available for children ages 7 through 14.

Cost for all three nights is $80 if registered before July 26. Late registration is $90 for those registering after July 26.

Lessons, course time, crafts, dinner each night, prizes and equipment are included in the price. Space in the clinic is limited.

NFL youth flag football league

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is currently taking registration for the NFL Youth Flag Football League.

The league teaches boys and girls the fundamentals of football, good sportsmanship and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive, non-contact way.

Players receive a reversible NFL flag jersey, mouthpiece and individual trophy. All games will be played on Saturdays at Stodick Park.

Participants will be divided into four age groups (6-8 coed, 9-11 coed and 12-14 coed). Players must be at least 6 and not 15 by Sept. 1, 2006.

Coaches will randomly choose teams through a draft system.

Volunteer coaches and sponsors are needed. Background checks will be required for all volunteer coaches. Registration is being accepted until Aug. 18 and the games will begin Sept. 9 and the cost will be $60 per participant. For more information, call the parks & recreation department at 782-9828.
