The women's Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club is partnering with the men's Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club and the co-ed Carson City club for the organization's annual children's shopping spree, set to take place on Aug. 5 at Wal-Mart in north Douglas County.

Stores are already starting their fall sales in hopes of getting children into the latest back-to-school gear, but not all can afford to shop. The three clubs recognize this, and are joining forces with Wal-Mart and the Family Support Council of Douglas County to sponsor the hands-on event.

"Last year, we were able to take 50 children shopping, but this year, we're hoping to take 70 children shopping by combining our fundraising efforts," said Jacquie Manoukian, co-chair for the event.

Each child will get $100 to spend on school clothes, shoes and backpacks to start the school year.

"The money can't be spent on toys," said Manoukian.

The Family Support Council of Douglas County chooses the children that get to participate based on income level and family need.

"This is the best hands-on event we have throughout the year," said Betsy Mauchley, member of the Sierra Nevada club.

"It's also a great opportunity for the public to see what we do for children in our community as we encourage everyone to contact us to volunteer."

The club's goal is to have one child for each volunteer. The volunteer will spend the morning with the child helping them pick out clothes and shoes for the coming year. It's also a great opportunity to bond with some of the children that need it most.

The clubs are looking for donations and volunteers to support the event. The group's goal is to raise at least $7,000 to take 70 children shopping.

"This is an annual event for the active 20-30 organization," said Mauchley. "All clubs across the country participate the first Saturday in August with the hope of improving the quality of life for each child involved."

At the end of the shopping spree, the children will enjoy a free breakfast at McDonald's.
