For the third consecutive year, the Alta Alpina Cycling Club has landed the Northern California/Northern Nevada Masters District cycling championships. The club will host the races - a road race in Woodfords Saturday and a criterium race around Minden Park Sunday - this weekend.
Racing begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with the men's 30-and-over class at Diamond Valley School.
The 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 and Category 3/4/5 (for racers under 30 or juniors) follow at five-minute intervals after that.
Racers will travel along an 11-mile loop with two main climbs per lap. The number of laps per race varies from 66 to 44, depending on the age group.
A second group will leave at 11 a.m. starting with the women's 30-34 and 35-39 classes and followed by the men's 50-54 and 55-59, the women's 40-44, 45-49 and 50-54 and the men's 60-64 and 65-over.
On Sunday, races are scheduled all day for the spectator-friendly criterium. Racers will compete on a downtown course that covers a little under a mile on the streets surrounding Minden Park. Races last approximately 40 to 60 minutes.
More than $1,500 cash will be divided up as prize money between the road race and the criterium. Approximately 500 riders are expected over the two days.
Riders can register up to 15 minutes before the start time of each race, but must have a USCF license to race in the masters categories.
Race fees for both the road race and the criterium is $30.
