The Douglas County Public Library has invited Janet Koenen to Minden to read from her work and lead a community workshop on the art of poetry writing. The reading will be held at the Minden Library at 11 a.m. on Saturday. A light lunch will be served at noon. Admission is free.
For those who would like more interaction with the writer, arrive at 12:45 p.m. for a poetry workshop. Koenen will provide both suggestions for improving poetry and writing exercises to get started with all those poems writers have wanted to write.
Koenen grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and St. Paul, Minn. At the University of Minnesota she earned a bachelor's degree in English summa cum laude and a master's in fine arts in creative writing. The month she graduated, she moved to Carson City.
She has been a recipient of a Split Rock Arts Fellowship and a Norcroft residency. Her poetry has appeared in The Texas Observer, Poetry Motel and Talking Leaves. She is writing a non-fiction account of working at Yosemite. She is a faculty member in the English department at Lake Tahoe Community College. She received an artist fellowship from the Nevada Arts Council in 2002.
This event is part of Tumblewords, a program of the Nevada Arts Council and the Western States Arts Foundation, and is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information contact the Douglas County Public Library at 1625 Library Lane in Minden, or call 782-9841.
