The Davis Gallery of Fine Art in Genoa hosted a "Celebration of the Arrival of Summer" reception Thursday, and the show will continue through June. An art demonstration by nationally-known artist Greg Drinkwine entertained visitors.

Drinkwine demonstrated plein-air painting and explained the techniques of producing a painting on scene, the value of catching the feeling of the moment in a three-dimensional world and not relying on a two-dimensional photograph.

Using the Raycraft Depot House across from the gallery as his subject, Drinkwine held the audience captivated as the image appeared before their eyes while he laid stroke after stroke of his brush down on the small canvas, explaining to the audience about light and subject as he worked.

Drinkwine's chosen subject, the Raycraft Depot House across Main Street from the gallery, was described by Nancy Miluck in her 1991 publication, The Genoa and Carson Valley Book published in 1991.

"Since the 1960s the home of Roy and Shirley Trimmer Giovacchini, this house was built around an 1850's building. It was once the law offices for both William W. Stewart, longtime senator and Judge Virgin, it was also the printing plant for 'The Banner' in 1865 and later a butcher shop and stage depot for the Raycraft Hotel and the Raycraft Bros. Stage Line."

The gallery's show of "summer themes" fine artwork will run all month. Artists represented in the show include Randall Sexton, Nancy MacDonald, Armand Cabrera, Charles Waldman and Plein Air Painters of America signature members Gay Faulkenberry, Glenna Hartmann, and Joseph Mendez as well as Greg Drinkwine and Cynthia Davis. Art styles in the gallery include figurative, landscape, still-life and urban scenery.

The gallery's event was catered by Tahoe Ridge Winery.
