The Nevada Department of Transportation closed Kingsbury Grade seven miles up from the intersection with Foothill Road until further notice.
The highway was closed on the Valley side at 9:15 a.m. today due to fear of potential landslide, according to state transportation spokesman Scott Magruder.
Magruder said there is no re-opening date at this time. State engineers are getting an emergency contract to repair the highway.
Kingsbury Grade is the main route between Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Alternate routes are to go to Carson City and use Highway 50 or through Alpine County on Highway 88 and turn at Highway 89 to South Lake Tahoe.
"We realize this closure is an inconvenience to commuters and motorists, but we do not want to compromise safety," NDOT Director Jeff Fontaine said.
