Two of the Douglas High track & field team's best athletes had the opportunity to represent Nevada at the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico earlier in the month.

The meet brought together the best competitors from Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Oklahoma, Colorado and Utah and athletes from Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming and Tennessee.

Ryan Bertucci, who claimed the Nevada state championship in the high jump in late May, cleared 6 feet, 6 inches to take fifth in the event at the Great Southwest meet.

Sarah Hartley jumped 34-6 in the triple jump to take ninth.

"It's quite an honor to be asked to represent your state at this meet and Ryan and Sarah did Nevada proud," Douglas track coach Rick Brown said.

Hartley and Bertucci were among the Tigers honored in the All-Region selections during the spring.

Hartley earned a first-team nod in the 200, the triple jump and the 4x400, where she was joined by Alicia Sturgess, Skylar Young, Jessica Gorton and Tina Dantin. She also was recognized on the second team in the 100. Bertucci was a first-teamer in the high jump and Young was a first-teamer in the 400. Sturgess earned a second-team nod in the high jump and Spencer Lewis was recognized in the 800.
