This moment in time is key for Douglas County. With the 10-year update of the county's master plan under way, we are in the midst of defining our future and coming to consensus on critical issues involving our quality of life, our environment and our economy. Most important among these issues is how we will manage our growth.
As chairman of the Douglas County Planning Commission I have been encouraged by the public's participation in the update process. It has motivated me to help bring our community together and build a positive future.
The job of county commissioner is a job we do together. It is about how "we the community" achieve our goals through a process of access, inclusion and involvement. My education, my public service record, my hands-on knowledge of the master plan and my business experience have equipped me to help resolve the issues we face: preserving agriculture and open space, ensuring balanced growth, using our water resources wisely, fostering economic vitality and finding solutions for problems related to traffic, housing, zoning and land use.
An effective county commissioner listens to all citizens, seeks to understand all perspectives and then makes the most appropriate decisions. This has been my approach to problem solving on the planning commission. It works. As your county commissioner, I will continue to encourage the public's participation in finding creative solutions to problems.
The community's input over the past four years has energized me. I promise a dedicated effort to help protect, preserve and enhance our county's well-being. I will be a full-time county commissioner, accessible to all, with no ties to any special interest group. Together we can accomplish what we want for a better future for our families, our economy and our environment.
Since moving to the Tahoe Basin in the late 1970s and to Douglas County in 1991, I have worked actively in the community to improve our quality of life. I will provide vision and determination as we build the public-private partnerships necessary to provide for our economic benefit while protecting the natural treasures we enjoy in Douglas County: our incredible Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake, our magnificent mountains, our beautiful valley and our special way of life.
