The kick off for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraiser will be 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday at GE Energy. The actual Relay for Life event will be at Lampe Park on August 26-27.
The kick off serves as a session to learn more about Relay for Life from community leaders and guest speakers. It also gives teams a first chance to register for the event.
"Last year, we raised over $60,000 and this year we hope to raise over $70,000 for cancer research, advocacy, local patient services, and education programs for our community," said Douglas County 2006 Co-chair Warren Kurtz.
Kurtz leads this event with his wife Donna, and Jennifer Kashuba, along with a lot of support from other volunteers in the community and the local American Cancer Society office.
"We hope to make this year's event the best Douglas County has seen, with plenty of entertainment, food, and an overnight celebration of cancer survivorship and memorial to those in our community who have lost the battle," Kurtz said.
Several area businesses and community groups have already committed to the August event and the relay committee hopes to meet more people and groups eager to learn more and ready to sign up at the kick off.
The kick off is at GE Energy at 1631 Bently Parkway, across from Western Nevada Community College's Douglas County campus. Refreshments will be provided. RSVP required: Warren and Donna 782-8009, Jennifer 782-3236, or WDBKurtz@aol.com
