James Lamb Jr., a Gardnerville resident being treated for a soft-tissue cancer at the University of San Francisco in California, will turn 18 on June 3.
Grandmother Marty Folin said he wanted to be home to celebrate but because he's receiving radiation and chemotherapy, the trip isn't possible.
"It breaks my heart to see him in this situation, but cards from home might make him feel better," she said.
