Snow falls in Valley

Snow fell in Genoa on Saturday morning after what the National Weather Service called a winter-like storm arrived in Western Nevada.

A light snow fell in the Valley's higher elevations as the temperature hovered around 34 degrees.

The Weather Service predicted that the coldest temperatures have yet to arrive with lows dropping near freezing tonight and Sunday morning.

Gardeners should protect outdoor plants as there is a possibility temperatures in the western valleys will drop into the 20s, according to the Weather Service.

As much as an inch or two of snow could fall at elevations above 7,000 feet today.

The Weather Service warned anyone involved in outdoor activities to bring warm clothes and be careful around cold fast-moving rivers and streams.

High winds knocked branches out of trees Friday night, with estimated wind gusts of 40-50 mph.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was responding to minor accidents at Spooner Summit and Highway 50 and along Highway 28 in Washoe County at Lake Tahoe.

Chains or snow tires are required on Kingsbury Grade from Foothill Road to Highway 50 in Stateline and on Highway 431 over Mount Rose Summit.
