Phyllis "Grandma Foo" Ashurst


1933-2006


A private memorial for family and close friends will be 1-5 p.m. Nov. 11 for Phyllis "Grandma Foo" Ashurst, 73, who died Oct. 21, 2006 in Gardnerville.


Mrs. Ashurst was born Aug. 12, 1933 in Gardnerville to William and Alvina Wilslef. She graduated from Douglas County High School and married Donald Ashurst, May 12, 1951 in Reno. She spent her life as a homemaker, very involved with her family and enjoyed doing crafts.


She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Ashurst, July 2, 2006. She is survived by her children Marilyn McKenzie of Woodfords, Calif.; Steve Ashurst of Coleville, Calif. and Gary Ashurst of Topaz Ranch Estates. She is also survived by six grandchildren Ashlee McKenzie of Gardnerville, Ross McKenzie of Woodfords, Joe Ashurst of Texas, Kyle Ashurst of Oakdale, Calif. and Steven and Stephanie Ashurst of Coleville, Calif.


Arrangements are in the care of Walton's Douglas County Mortuary with cremation to take place at Walton's Sierra Crematory in Carson City.




Sandra J. Baden


1947-2006


A memorial service was 10:30 a.m. Nov. 7 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb., for Sandra (Ward) J. Baden, 59, who died Nov. 2, 2006, in Seward, Neb.


Mrs. Baden was born March 10, 1947, in Reno and graduated from Douglas County High School in 1965. She married her husband John Baden in Temple City, Calif. May 27, 1966. She worked as a certified nurses aid and dietary supervisor. Former head cook at St. John Lutheran School in Seward, Neb. She was a member of the Blue Valley Quilt Guild.


Mrs. Baden was preceded in death by her parents Ray and Louise Clark Ward. She is survived by her husband John Baden; daughters Constance and her husband Jeff Dahm of Arvada, Colo. Nancy and her husband Jason Richters of Seward, Neb. and Lynn Brumm of Seward, Neb. She is also survived by three brothers Terry Shope of Long Beach, Calif., Brant Ward of Petaluma, Calif., Mark Ward of Falls Church, Va. as well as eight grandchildren.


Arrangements are in the care of Volzke Funeral Home in Seward, Neb., with inurnment to take place at Seward Cemetery.




John Franklin Larison


1930-2006


A meeting of memories is 2-4 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe for John Franklin Larison, 76, who died Nov. 3, 2006, at Stateline.


Mr. Larison was born July 26, 1930, in Union County, Ore., to John Spencer and Emmy Louise Knotts Larison. He attended Eastern Oregon College and served honorably in the Navy from 1951-1954. He was the owner/operator of Communications. Prior to living at Stateline he lived in Alexandria, Va. He is survived by children, Michael and Marsha Bluto; grandchildren Larison, Cole and Marijke Bluto as well as his brother Craig Larison and wife Beverly from La Grande, Ore. and nieces Kari Ewert and Kelli Lovell. Arrangements are in the care of Walton's Douglas County Mortuary in Minden. Cremation to take place at Walton's Sierra Crematory in Carson City.




Angelo Mazza


1926-2006


A funeral mass will be 9 a.m. Nov. 9 at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, 2525 N. Arrowhead Ave., San Bernardino, Calif., for Angelo Mazza, 80, who died Nov. 2, 2006, at Loma Linda Veterans Hospital.


Mr. Mazza was a first generation American, both his parents were born in Italy. He attended schools in Arizona and Rockford, Ill. He served in the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet during World War II with an honorable discharge and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. He owned a successful shoe business, Angelo's Shoe Service, which was located in San Bernardino for 58 years and another store located in Gardnerville. He was past Commander of the American Legion No. 777 and a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Gloria and her husband Dr. Michael Kruetz of San Clemente, Calif; sons Angelo Jr. of Lake Tahoe, Patrick and his wife Julie of Corona, Calif., Michael and his wife Kristie of Reno; brother Col. Jay Vargas and wife Dottie of La Jolla, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


Arrangements are in the care of Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, 1299 E. Highland Ave., San Bernardino, Calif. A public viewing is today from 5-7 p.m. at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. Burial and presentation of military honors will be 11 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, Calif. at Staging Area No. 7. Jack Harry Troy


1924-2006


A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at St. Gall Catholic Church for Jack Harry Troy, 82, who died Oct. 28, 2006, at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.


Mr. Troy was born in Los Angeles, Calif. June 26, 1924 to Harry and Catherine Troy. Raised in San Bernardino, Calif., he graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1942 and then worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in the round house for eight years before taking a job with wholesaler Inland Distributing for 10 years. During that time he obtained his A.A. from San Bernardino Valley College and his B.A. from Cal State Los Angeles in education, while working and attending college classes at night. His first teaching assignment was a sixth grade class in 1961 at Mt. Vernon Elementary School in San Bernardino. He retired from San Bernardino Unified School District after 23 years of elementary school teaching.


Mr. Troy met his wife, Mary Sullivan, through Saint Bernardine Catholic Church, and they were married in Spokane, Wash. in 1955. The couple raised their family in Rialto, Calif. and ultimately relocated to Minden in 1990, where they have resided for the last 16 years. He was a devout Roman Catholic, an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and a teacher of religious education. He previously worshiped at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Carson City and was a member of the St. Gall Catholic Church congregation at the time of his death. Mr. Troy was an extensive reader, keenly interested in politics, and actively pursued bowling, woodworking, and his favorite pursuit, grandparenting.


Preceded in death by his mother Catherine Troy in 1963, father Harry Troy in 1985, and brother Tom Troy in 1998, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Eleanor Troy, of Minden, daughter Nancy Kathleen Cauley, son-in-law Ron Cauley, and grandchildren Mackenzie Brynn Cauley and Sullivan Troy Cauley all of Gardnerville, daughter Sheryl Fox, of Reno, brother Donald Troy, of San Bernardino, Calif., and sister Sheila Holtshneider, of Boston Mass.
