Smith Valley High School junior Linsey Lekumberry was hoping just to qualify for the Idaho-Nevada State Rodeo Finals in Winnemucca last month.
She accomplished that just fine, but ended up coming away with a championship saddle in team roping as well.
Lekumberry teamed with Kevin Hancock of Fallon, going up against more than 300 teams. They were required to team rope four steers in seperate runs and came away with a combined time of just 38 seconds.
Along with winning the saddle, she and her partner were each paid $1,271, which she plans on using toward her college degree.
Lekumberry competes with the Yerington/Smith Valley High School Rodeo Club during the school year in team roping and breakaway calf roping.
During the offseason, she and her family travel around the state at various competitions. She also has joined the American Cowboy Team Roping Association.
