The Nevada Indian Commission in partnership with Artistic Viewpoints Gallery of Gardnerville is hosting a dedication and fundraising reception for the future Stewart Indian Cultural Center. The reception will be held 12:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stewart Facility (south Carson off of Snyder Avenue) in Carson City.
The reception is geared toward generating support and funding for the establishment of the Stewart Indian Cultural Center at the former Stewart Indian School Campus. The Indian Boarding School was established in 1890 and closed in 1980. Over its 90-year history, thousands of American Indian students from more than 200 different tribes attended. Shortly after its closure in 1980, a museum was established to house the memorabilia of the school. Changing many hands over a 20-year period, the responsibility to showcase the memorabilia now lies with the State of Nevada Indian Commission. Over 800 items are currently in storage at the Nevada State Museum annex and Nevada Historical Society awaiting a home.
Activities will include a "Dat so la lee" portrait by local artist Ray Freeman, food, drinks, music and Native American art.
All are invited to attend this free event. For more information on the event go to www.indiancommission.state.nv.us or call Sherry Rupert at 687-8333.
