County seeking volunteers for various board positions

Planning Commission Chairman Nancy McDermid, who was elected to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in November, will take her new position soon.

County officials have started the search for a replacement for the planning commission and anyone wishing to apply can do so through the Douglas County manager's office by Dec. 15.

Planning commission members provide advice on land use planning matters, review development applications for compliance with county ordinances and provide oversight in the master plan process.

Seven members hold four-year terms.

The process of choosing new board members is an annual event and 12 other boards have openings this year.

These citizens assist in formulating county policy and carrying out responsibilities per Nevada law. The strength and success of the Douglas County government is to a large degree reflective of the quality of services performed by these volunteers, according to county officials.

The following is a brief summary of each:

-- The Airport Advisory Committee provides advice on policy matters concerning the management and development of the Minden-Tahoe Airport. Seven members hold two-year terms.

-- The Board of Equalization addresses property tax appeals by county residents. Five members hold four-year terms.

-- The Genoa Historic District Commission reviews proposed building changes or development plans within the district. Five members hold 2-year terms.

-- The Law Library Board governs and manages the county's law library. A maximum of three district judges are ex-officio trustees and commissioners appoint enough trustees to complete the board, including at least two who are not attorneys. Seven members hold two-year terms.

-- The Library Board of Trustees is has the responsibility for library operations and provides direction on policy matters for the Douglas County library. Five members hold four-year terms.

-- The Parks and Recreation Commission provides advice on policy matters pertaining to Douglas County parks and resources recreation activities. Seven members hold two-year terms.

-- The Ratemaking Committee helps with development of rates for the franchise agreement with Douglas Disposal Inc. Five members hold two-year terms.

-- The Senior Services Advisory Council provides advice regarding numerous senior programs in Douglas County, including operation of the senior center and senior nutrition program. Seven members hold two-year terms.

-- The Water Conveyance Advisory Committee was formed to advise commissioners on the effects of development on water conveyance systems in Douglas County. The committee reviews development proposals including subdivisions, parcels and land division maps.

Members must be current or past water conveyance users, or have experience in soil conservation or other related fields. Five members hold two-year terms.

-- The Carson Water Subconservancy District provides advice and recommendations for water issues and projects impacting Douglas County and the Carson River drainage area. Thirteen members hold four-year terms.

-- The Douglas County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife provides recommendations to the State Board of Wildlife Commission, setting seasons for fishing, hunting, trapping and other wildlife matters in Douglas County.

Five members hold 3-year terms.

-- The Regional Transportation Commission provides advice regarding existing and future transportation needs and issues in Douglas County. Three members hold two-year terms.
