The R-C Sports Notebook is a weekly online-exclusive column that appears every Tuesday on www.recordcourier.com. It contains observations, rumors, scoops and briefs from the Douglas County sports world.
The Douglas boys' basketball team participated in its second round of preseason scrimmages Saturday, this time at North Valleys.
Because the scrimmages count as preseason workouts, a running score wasn't kept.
Douglas did well in its opener against McQueen and then slowed down against North Valleys, Oakland, and Dayton.
The junior varsity and freshman squads also saw their first action of the season.
The freshmen were particularly impressive against McQueen, North Valleys and Dayton with C.J. Marcotte, Luis Pina, Chris Schonian and Junior Pacheco all having big afternoons.
The Tiger varsity will open at the South Tahoe Invitational Thursday at 6 p.m.
On the girls' side, Douglas got its first taste of competition on all three levels at Spanish Springs Saturday. The Lady Tigers varsity struggled a bit, but had promising games from post players Jessica Waggoner and Dana Pardee.
Douglas' height should be a large advantage this season, especially when the team heads into the thick of league play in January. The Tigers have three players at six feet or above.
- The Douglas Pee Wee Pop Warner team suffered a 13-6 loss to the Las Vegas Green Machine Saturday in the state championship at Damonte Ranch.
Douglas given up only one touchdown to a Nevada team in the last two years, but Vegas had a number of big, quick players.
