No. 1 Whittell shuts down Douglas

For the third year in a row, Whittell topped Douglas in the yearly non-conference volleyball matchup between the two teams.


The Warriors, who have been ranked No. 1 in the Sierra Nevada Sports Media Poll since the second week in the season, blasted past the No. 3 Tigers 25-16, 25-18, 25-8 at Douglas High Friday night.


Jessica Waggoner led the way for the Tigers with 10 kills, four blocks, two aces and a dig.


Alex Risko had eight kills and two digs and Megan Myers had six kills, one block, one assist and one dig.


Bridget Maestretti added five kills, four blocks and one ace.


Allie Hughes had 19 assists and two digs and Megan Mitchell had 15 assists and two aces.


Danielle Brown and Kaylee Hall had two kills each and Hall added an ace and an assist.


Mary Lombino had five digs, Jennifer Stice had a kill and Ali Witteman had one dig.


Douglas dropped to 14-8 overall.

Douglas lost to Reno in three games, 25-21, 20-25, 16-14.


Joudran Burke had five kills, Mel Brown had six kills, Mysta Townsell had four kills and Rebecca Antti, Alyssa Hamilton, Jordan Marsh and Christine DuPuis had one kill for the match.


Lindsay McKay player libero and had 10 digs on the night.


DePuis served five points in a row with two aces. Townsell had six serves in a row and Hamilton had a number of digs and passes to set the team up to win the second game. Marsh had 15 assists in the match.


Douglas topped Whittell Friday, 25-9, 25-15. Chloe Trudell highlighted the evening with 11 service points in a row with two aces.


She also had three kills. Hamilton had two aces and Katrina Morgan served six in a row with one ace.


DuPuis, Townsell and Morgan each had three kills for the evening. Edna Meza did a great job in the middle with four kills and some tough net play. Burke, Antti and McKay each added one kill and Marsh had five assists. Trudell added nine assists.
