A new Douglas County deputy was found dead behind a north Valley department store on Thursday afternoon after a daylong search.

Deputy Brandon Berry, 22, left his Carson City home for his second day at work at about 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday, but he never arrived.

Sgt. Tom Mezzetta of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Berry was found inside his vehicle.

"A preliminary investigation indicates that Deputy Berry died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," Mezzetta said.

Berry's black 1991 Nissan 240SX two door hatchback was found thanks to information put out by the press on Thursday.

A full investigation is being conducted into Berry's death. He had taken a job as a deputy on Tuesday and was assigned to the jail.

The Sheriff's Office issued a report that Berry was missing at 10 a.m. Thursday.
