The Department of Defense said Pfc. Phillip B. Williams, 21, of Gardnerville died Oct. 9 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries suffered from enemy contact during combat operations. Williams was assigned to the 4th Brigade Troop Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Williams attended Douglas High School and received his GED last year before joining the service.

His body will return to Minden to be buried in Nevada soil.

A Wellington woman received a $632 fine in connection with a May fatal accident that occurred in Topaz Ranch Estates.

Windie Lee Atchison, 33, paid the fine after pleading no contest to one count in the accident that killed 90-year-old Darrell David Daugherty as he was turning onto Albite Road from Highway 208. The rear of Daugherty's Ford was obliterated in the collision.

Firefighters responded to a report of smoke in a building at County Road and Highway 88 this morning.

Units from Minden, Gardnerville and Johnson lane were among those responding to the call.

Firefighters cleared the building at 7:45 p.m. after inspecting the attic and heater space and determining that it appeared to be dust in the heating system.
