Playing in a driving rainstorm from the second quarter on, the Douglas Junior Midget Tigers defeated the Reno Ravens 28-0 last Friday night at Mira Loma Park in Reno.
In doing so, the Tigers recorded their fourth straight victory and third straight shutout.
Douglas scored on its first offensive play of the game with quarterback Sam Cochran hitting Theo Denson on a long pass up the left sideline. The try for the point failed.
The Tigers soon had the ball again and this time engineered a drive featuring the running of Shane Fencl, Cory Dillon and Denson.
As in previous games, the blocking of Ryan Simons, Derick Gilmore, Austin Park, Greg Smith, Kevin Owens and Brock Crawford led the drive. Fencl's touchdown run made the score 12-0.
In the second quarter, the offense scored a third time.
This time, after moving the ball inside the 10-yard line with the running game, Cochran hit wideout Christian Neilander on a slant pattern for the score. Denson's kick for the extra point was good as the Tigers closed out the half leading 20-0.
In the second half, the weather had made game conditions difficult. The ball was slippery and the field was soggy and loose. The Tiger defense, led by linebackers Scott Rudnick, Cody Valente and Connor Love, continued to shut down the Ravens throughout the half. Linemen Daniel Lundergreen, Chase Gonzales, David Sanchez and Wyle Derbyshire kept pressure up front, ends Ruben Trujillo and Justin Tenney kept the sweeps contained and defensive backs Colton Hughes, Duston Gilbert, Dillon Spates and Alan Bolanos kept the Ravens from getting any passing game sarted.
Kellen Bradberry recovered a fumble and Shawn Castillo had a sack.
Douglas' final drive was keyed by the blocking of ends Nolan Lackey, Tim Fonteyn and Tim Tollefson. Linemen Samuel Amador and Brandon Berry also chipped in as Fencl scored his second touchdown.
Douglas hosts the Reno Falcons tonight at Stodick Park at 6 p.m.
JUNIOR PEE WEES
Douglas beat the Reno Falcons 6-0 in heavy rain and a muddy field to remain unbeaten at 5-0.
The team overcame the rain and mud as Tyler Seamons scored on a two-yard plunge early in the fourth quarter to provide the life the Tigers needed for the win.
Douglas' defense carried the rest of the game, causing two fumbles late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Douglas didn't allow any runs longer than 10 yards and Brandon Valdez made a touchdown-saving tackle and Kaleb Foster and Mathew Jones caused two fumbles with big hits.
Reed Winans and Joseph Petrali kept the Falcon receivers in check, not allowing any pass completions, and Seth Trivitt and Taylor Souza shut down the outside.
Seamons, Foster and Jones made big tackles to stop the Falcon offense.
Josh Curtis, Brennan Nailon, Ian Pielier, Cameron Fricke, Kole Ackerson, Wyatt Eichorst and Taylor Seamons played big on the defensive line, plugging up the lanes to stop the running backs. Brandon Valdez was also tough from his safety position.
Despite the heavy rain, the offense played well.
Douglas struggled to get to the outside, but took advantage of its strong line by hammering the ball up the middle.
The line was led by Ryan Philips, Nathan Clinger, Ben Cochran, Tim Chandler, Justin Carney, Austin Dickey, Mason Garduno, Wyatt Leonard, Daniel Long, Kyle McDaniel, Mitchell McIntosh and Colton Waggoner.
Austin Ball, Cody Carter, Bryce Belanger, Conner Lyons and Seamons ran the ball hard and quarterback Wes Hundley led the offense.
Douglas takes on Fallon at Fallon Saturday at noon.
