Next Tuesday, there are several California state issues and two local races that need our attention and our vote. Inform yourself, form an opinion, and vote.
A flag for Amanda
On Oct. 21, members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3567 presented an American flag to local resident Amanda Hershey after her enlistment in the Navy. She will be leaving in mid-November for her basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, north of Chicago. After she completes that course, the understanding at this time is that she will be based in Okinawa. Our respect and best wishes go with her.
Women's Club Bazaar
Beginning noon Nov. 12 at the Walker Community Center will be a great chance to check out vendors, crafts and the white elephant table; then enjoy their dinner available from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dinner cost is $9 for adults and $4 for children 10 and younger. Plan ahead for this one.
Art show
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Walker Senior Center, the Antelope Valley Artists are sponsoring a juried show of many different types of artwork. I'm really looking forward to seeing their newest works, since I have seen some before and know how talented these artists are.
Local school sports updates
Antelope Elementary School's football team, the Wolverines, finished their season with a 3-1 record, winning their last game 34-12 Oct. 23.
Coleville High School football is over for the season, but they finished in fine style, defeating McDermitt 60-20. The good news is that only three of our players are seniors, so the nucleus of a really good team is already here.
Coleville High School varsity volleyball has been tearing along at a fantastic pace this season. Their last two regular matches were Oct. 26 against Sage Ridge, with CHS winning both, finishing their year with a league record of 14-0. Nov. 3 and 4, the girls, who are ranked No. 1 in the western division, will be in Elko for the regional playoffs, preparing for the state championship. We're all rooting hard for them to continue their winning ways.
Regional Planning Advisory Committee
The RPAC meeting is 7 p.m.Thursday evening at the Walker Community Center. Among other things, there will be a presentation by Mono County Animal Control on disaster preparedness for your animals.
This and that
Saturday's town hall meeting and pasta dinner sponsored by supervisor candidate Bob Peters was well attended, with many people asking very good questions and having them answered. The dinner and cake afterward were very tasty and the company was congenial.
The fire commission's regular meeting is 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Walker Fire Station.
I'll be reminding you in coming columns about the Coleville High School Boosters' Mexican Dinner Night on Nov. 18. Mark your calendars now, as this is a fun nd very worthwhile fundraising event for both school athletics and academics. They will have a silent auction, dessert auction and raffles, as well as the chance to win a special door prize.
