A whole day was devoted for reviewing the school's policies in the High Five program where Carson Valley Middle School students are rewarded for following the rules.

This is the fourth year in a row the middle school has taken a day to teach students to: be there, be ready; hands and feet to self; be responsible; follow directions and be respectful.

Friday's itinerary included two-hour programs with guest speakers on subjects specific to each grade. Students learned about study skills, an FBI agent spoke about Internet safety and officers from Douglas County Sheriff's Office instructed students on "Laws 4 Youth."

Douglas High School Counselors Dori Draper and Trish Wentz talked about stress management and career guidance. Douglas Principal Marty Swisher talked to ninth graders about high school graduation requirements.

The middle school students receive "Tiger Bucks" for following the rules that they may redeem once a week for raffles, prizes and getting to the front of the lunch line.

The whole school's reward for their participation in the High Five program was ice cream bars.

"Every Friday we will do something to recognize students," said Counselor Shaunda Vasey. "We're setting expectations in a positive way."
