The Douglas County Public Library in Minden is featuring a display of banned and challenged books to celebrate Banned Books Week.
Observed since 1982, this event reminds Americans not to take precious democratic freedom for granted. The display tells us that we have the freedom to choose and express our opinion even if it is unpopular. It ensures the availability of information to those who wish to read it. The "Library Bill of Rights" states, "Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment."
Several banned books will be displayed at the library through the end of September. Banned Books Week 2006 is Sept 23-30.
The library is open Mondays through Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays.
