Relay for Life wins award

Douglas County received an award as being the No. 1 fundraiser per capita for a county population of 45,000-49,999 in the Great West Division this past weekend for their fundraising efforts with Relay For Life in 2006. The Great West Division consists of the following 12 states - Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Douglas County was host to two Relay For Life events this year, one in South Lake Tahoe in July, and one in Gardnerville in August. Between the two Relay's, Douglas County raised more than $200,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The Relay For Life event in South Lake Tahoe also received an award for No. 1 Rookie Event in the Great West Division for 2006, earning over $114,000. Money raised at these events is allocated by the American Cancer Society for Research, Patient Services, Education and Advocacy.
