Area art teacher offers classes

Carson Valley artist Mark Tompkins works as a teacher at both the Western Nevada Community College Douglas Campus and at the new art gallery located at 88 Cups in Minden Village at the corner of Lucerne and Highway 395.

Tompkins has a noted background in art. He attended classes at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Afterwards, he worked as a graphic artist for a number of years before moving to the area. Aside from the 88 Cups Gallery and the local college, Tompkins teaches classes for the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department and gives private lessons out of his studio in Minden. The classes at 88 Cups are Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $20 per lesson.

"There is no need to sign up," Tompkins said. "Just come when you can."

"The students supply their own paints with either watercolor, oil or acrylic paints. I teach all media," he said. "The gallery connects to the main dining room of 88 Cups. So come and paint and enjoy your favorite gourmet coffee. Many folks come through the gallery to view the many paintings on display. All are for sale. We welcome the public."

Tompkins' inspiration and painting style are influenced by the early Renaissance artists as well as by artists Andrew Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish. He enjoys painting landscapes, wildlife and portraits. Tompkins has won numerous awards in group competitions and continues to paint his favorite Sierra landscapes.
