The Candy Dance has been a tradition for many years, but a new tradition began a decade ago. For the last 10 years, Martha and Bob Williams, owners of Antiques Plus, have been putting on the Peddler's Fair during the Candy Dance. The Peddler's Fair is an arts and crafts fair.
"During the Candy Dance they block off the road, and it puts me out of business for that weekend. I decided to fight back for business, so I started the Peddler's Fair," said Martha. "It's hard for people to make a buck, so I decided to make it easier for people. That's why I don't put a lot of rules on our vendors."
Some 65 vendors are scheduled for this year's fair, and Williams said that she has had great success in the past, with every space available being filled every year.
They offer art, crafts, antiques, and a food court with beer, as well as wine. There is plenty of shade and they provide their own parking.
"When you reach the block, just tell the officer that you are going to the Peddler's Fair," said Williams. "They will let you in."
Vendors bring whatever they wish to sell and set up their booths. It is a good way for people to make money when the economy is having a bad year, Williams said.
Antiques Plus takes the money they make from the fair and donates a portion to the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra.
"I am always honest with our vendors and try to keep the restrictions low," said Williams. "The fair has a good reputation."
Both the Peddler's Fair and the Candy Dance take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday in Genoa. A Candy Dance dinner/dance at the Orchard House featuring Buffalo Country starts at 6 p.m. Between the two events there are typically more than 400 craft booths. Proceeds from the Candy Dance, over the years, have paid for 80 percent of the Town of Genoa's revenue.
Antiques Plus is located at 2242 Main St., south of Genoa. For information call 782-4951.
