A 23-year-old Gardnerville Ranchos man was jailed on $108,500 bail after deputies recovered backpacks and duffel bags full of items reported stolen in a series of residential burglaries in California.

Matthew Paul Anton was arrested Monday at his residence on charges of possession of stolen property, contempt, possession of drug paraphernalia and outside warrants.

He had returned to the area Sept. 7 after he bailed out of jail in Sacramento on a burglary and possession of stolen property charges in California.

He had outstanding warrants from Carson City and East Fork justice courts.

Deputies found several backpacks, a duffel bag, a suitcase and a box filled with checkbooks, credit cards and California drivers' licenses.

They also recovered a CB radio, camera, blood pressure cuff, computer cables, cell phone and Palm Pilot.

Sacramento authorities confirmed that the IDs on the checkbooks and credit cards matched the names of victims of a series of residential burglaries.

n An alert employee of the pro shop at the Genoa Lakes Golf Course spied a golfer wearing a pair of $315 men's shoes on the course which he took without purchasing.

The merchandise manager noticed the shoes missing from the display and found an empty box hidden in a cabinet near the display. She and an associate went out to the golf course to observe patrons as they drove by on their golf carts and saw the suspect wearing the shoes.

He said he paid for the shoes with a credit card but was unable to explain why he hid the box.

He said, "I thought you knew I wore them out of the shop."

The man returned to the shop, insisting he had paid for the shoes and didn't want to be charged twice. A check of his credit card showed no purchase had been made.

The man paid for the shoes and the shop owner did not press charges.
