Things couldn't have gone much better for the Douglas High School cross country team at Lampe Park Wednesday afternoon.
Both the boys' and girls' squads dominated their races, winning the team event.
Whitney Lindsey won the girls' race in 20 minutes, 44 seconds and Taylor Biaggi took second in 21:28. Skylar Young followed in fourth at 23:08, Sara Mangiaracina took fifth in 23:17, Cassie Hood took sixth in 23:26 and Anna Chiapella took eighth in 23:50.
"The kids really stepped it up today and dominated both Hug and Wooster in all aspects of the race," Douglas coach Keith Cole said. "It was a flat and fast course at Lampe and they took advantage of it.
"Whitney and Taylor showed once again why they are state contenders by both finishing more than a minute ahead of everyone else. I was especially impressed with Mangiaracina and Young. It was Skylar's first cross country race and she showed that she has a lot of talent running distance as well as running sprints on the track.
"We are very fortunate to have her. Sara also had an impressive race. She has been working hard at practice and has shown a lot of patience as she adapts to high school cross country."
The boys also easily won their race, getting a third-place finish from Spencer Lewis (18:24) and a fourth-place from David Williams (18:50). Derrik Jenkins took sixth (18:59), Corey Trujillo took eighth (19:38), Seth White took ninth (19:42) and Scott Lococo took 11th (19:57).
"For the boys, we had the usual four leading the pack," Cole said. "Spencer, David, Derrik and Corey all had superb races. They are sticking close enough to each other that they are all making a big impact on the competition.
'With the addition of Seth White as our No. 5 runner and Scott Lococo as No. 6, we are going to be very competitive as the mid-part of the season approaches."
