The Douglas Tigers Pee Wee Pop Warner football team opened up the season with two shutout victories.
Douglas started by beating the Sparks Cardinals 27-0 and then followed that up with an impressive 25-0 win over the talented Sparks Wolf Pack.
Douglas' defense has been playing its swarming style of aggressive defense and did not give up any first downs in its first game and only three last week against the Wolf Pack.
Quick lineman Adam Munoz, Cody Hayes, Brett Ferrari and Josh Valdez have been putting a lot of pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
They had numerous sacks in the first game and, due to their pressure, the Cardinals were never able to get a pass off.
Power linemen Jack Gooding, Andrew Martinez, Dylan Wilson and Timmy Jacobsen have used their combo of strength and quickness to totally shut down both team's rushing attacks.
Defensive backs J.P. Garner, Dusty Fisher and Michael Nolting have been impressive as well with Garner and Fisher making key tackles on the outside and Nolting picking off a pass.
Douglas is loaded with talent and great blocking up front this season. Linemen Jason Connolly, Jake Connolly, Jesse Urteaga, Kurtis Dimitri and Jackson Ketron and tight ends Connor Greth and Stephen Werth have been the key players in opening holes for the Douglas running backs to go through.
Against the Cardinals, Jack Crawford, Dusty Fisher, Sully Cauley and Conner Peterson all scored touchdowns.
Against the Wolf Pack, the Tigers got their passing game going as Isaac Keway caught two passes, fullback Colton McKone hauled in one and quarterback Nolting caught a pass from tailback Peterson and then Nolting later completed the Tigers' first touchdown pass of the year to Dusty Fisher.
The line opened up some more big holes against the Wolf Pack as Peterson ran for three long touchdowns.
Douglas plays its first home game of the season tonight at 8 p.m. at Stodick Park.
JUNIOR PEE WEE
Douglas topped the Reno Patriots 18-7 to improve to 2-0 on the year last week.
The Tigers' running game was explosive with the running of Cody Carter, who went for three touchdowns.
Tyler Seamons, Bryce Belanger, Conner Lyons, Austin Ball and Wes Hundley all ran the ball hard for the offense as well.
The offensive line opened big holes all night for the backs, led by Ben Cochran, Tim Chandler, Nathan Clingler, Justin Carney, Austin Dickey, Mason Garduno, Wyatt Leonard, Daniel Long, Kyle McDaniel, Mitchell McIntosh, Ryan Philips and Colton Waggoner.
The defense was stellar all night, led by hard-hitting linebackers Kaleb Foster who forced two fumbles, Tyler Seamons, and Matthew Jones.
Taylor Souza had a great night, stopping any outside running at his defensive end position and Josh Curtis, Wyatt Eichhorst, Ian Pielier, Kole Ackerson, Taylor Seamons, Brennan Neilon, Seth Trivitt, Cameron Fricke and Ty Hoffman led the line and defensive backs Joseph Petrali, Reed Winans and Brandon Valdez allowed just one completed pass.
Douglas hosts South Tahoe at Stodick Park tonigh at 6 p.m.
JUNIOR MIDGETS
Douglas picked up its second victory of the year last week at Truckee, taking a 27-0 win against the Wolverines.
The offense was led by the front line of Derick Gilmore, Austin Park, Ryan Simons, Greg Smith and Brock Crawford.
Their blocking allowed running backs Tanner Matlock and Shane Fencl to move the ball down the field on several crisp runs on the opening drive.
These runs were keyed by the lead blocks of fullback Corey Dillon.
Fencl scored the first touchdown on a short run off right tackle.
The Tigers later marched down again but lost the ball in the end zone on a fumble.
On the next drive, quarterback Sam Cochran found Christian Neilander for a 25-yard touchdown pass and completed a pass to Tim Fonteyn for the extra point.
The Tiger defense continued to put the clamps on the Wolverines throughout the game. Linemen Cody Valente, Daniel Lundergreen, Brandon Berry, Chase Gonzales, David Sanchez and Wyle Derbyshire kept pressure up front while middle linebacker Scott Rudnick, ends Ruden Trujillo and Connor Love and outside linebackers Justin Tenney and Alan Bolanos kept the run game contained.
Defensive backs Colton Hughes, Dustin Gilbert and Theo Denson provided support against the run, but were not tested in the air because Truckee did not show a passing game.
In the second half, offensive linemen Samuel Amador, Kevin Owens, Kellen Bradbury and Tim Tollefson rotated into the game and the Tigers scored two more touchdowns. The first was on a run of 50 yards by Shane Fencl. Nolan Lackey caught a pass from Cochran for the extra point.
Cochran then scored on a one-yard sneak.
A number of linemen carried the ball near the end of the game, highlighted by a juking run from Kevin Owens.
Last week, Douglas topped the Sparks Steelers 16-14 as Cochran completed two touchdown passes to Theo Denson.
