Digest: Carson Valley 7th-graders off to strong start

The Carson Valley Middle School seventh-grade girls' basketball team has built a 3-2 record to begin the season, picking up wins against Alder Creek, Eagle Valley and South Tahoe.


Katie Dry scored nine points to lead the Tigers against Alder Creek while Cassi Uhart, Kelsey Walsh and Holly Downer scored eight each.


Against Eagle Valley, Dry scored eight points and Downer added five.


Downer and uhart each scored five points in a close 19-18 loss to Carson and Downer scored 14 points to lead the Tigers in a 50-8 win against South Tahoe.


Walsh had eight points and Uhart and Dry had seven each in that game.


Amanda Wartgow scored six points and Uhart scored four in a 24-12 loss to Winnemucca.


The eighth-graders struggled out of the gates, losing their first three games but have bounced back in the last week to beat South Tahoe and Winnemucca.


Breanne Burnside scored seven points and Kathleen Salazar added four in a 20-19 loss to Alder Creek and Burnside and Mia Townsell each scored six points in a loss to Eagle Valley.


Devyn Hotho, Burnside and Townsell each scored four points in a loss to Carson.


Townsell scored 10, Burnside had eight, Salazar scored six and Danielle Lorntzen added four in a 34-4 win over South Tahoe and Townsell scored nine and Salazar added eight in a 19-18 nail-biting win over Winnemucca.


Coach Mike Rechs also noted Jackie Harper and Brenna White for hustle and Tara Richardson for rebounding.




Lil' Tiger workouts


The Douglas High School boys' basketball team will be hosting a series of open gym workouts for boys and girls grades three through nine begining. Saturday at the Douglas High gym.


Workouts run from 8 to 10 a.m. on Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 14 and 21.


Cost is $20 per workout or $60 for all four.


Instruction will be provided by the boys' basketball coaching staff and several of the Tiger basketball players will be on hand as counselors.


Registration will be taken at the door.




Winter Sports Clearance


The 2006-07 winter sports season is just around the corner.


Students interested in participating in a winter sport at Douglas High School must obtain clearance through the athletic department prior to any participation.


A clearance night for winter sports has been scheduled for Oct. 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Douglas High School commons.


The mandatory extracurricular drug policy presentation is at 6 p.m. on that same evening.


The athlete, along with at least one of their parent/legal guardians, must attend the presentation.


If the athlete or the parent/legal guardian is not in attendance, the athlete will not be able to try out.


Students planning to participate in a spring sport are also encouraged to attend the October clearance. Douglas Student Body Cards will be sold at the clearance night as well.

Old Guys Basketball


Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.


After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.


Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from Septembet to June.

Hunter safety class


A hunter safety class will be Sept. 30 at the Nevada Cooperative Extension Building, 1329 Waterloo Lane, across from Lampe Park in Gardnerville. Class size is limited. Participants must pre-register and complete a workbook prior to the class.


The class, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will focus on gun safety, wilderness survival and hunting ethics. Successful participants will receive their hunter certificate at the end of class.


Participants must be at least 11 years old. You must be 12 or older to purchase a Nevada hunting license. For more information contact:

Nevada Lightning softball tryouts


The Nevada Lightning girls' fastpitch softball 12-under team is looking for experienced tournament players for the 2006 fall and 2007 seasons.


Tryouts will be conducted through September.
