Digest: Carson Valley Men's Golf Club results

The Carson Valley Men's Golf Club hosted a four-man orange ball tournament at Carson Valley Golf Course Sunday.

The team of Larry Johnson, John R. Miller, Ken Sharples and Stan Sherwood won the event with a score of 117.

Paul Finan, Augustine Martinez and Neil Bain took second with a 120 and Don Harrison, M. Sorem, John Kollar and Ed Kollar took third with a 122.

Gerald Bing, John Carey, John Dorman and Jerry Maddox took fourth with a 123.

Closest to the pin honors went to Neil Bain (10 feet, 9 inches) and Randy Patterson (12-6).

Best of Kirkwood dinner

The Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation is hosting its 12th annual Best of Kirkwood dinner and auction benefitting the youth ski and snowboard athletes at the resort April 14 at 4 p.m.

Kirkwood will be barbecueing along with breweries and wineries pouring some of their best.

A number of prizes will be awarded including a Rossignol ski and binding package, a Kirkwood season pass, guided fly fishing tours and rounds of golf.

South Lake Tahoe band Grand 58 will provide music for the event.

The dinner and auction starts at 4 p.m. in the Red Cliffs Day Lodge at Kirkwood.

Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for children ($45 and $25 at the door).

Swing for a Cure moves to Genoa Lakes

The fifth annual Shakey Begovich Memorial Swing for a Cure Golf Tournament will be May 20 at the Genoa Lakes Resort Course.

Individual registration is $125 and sponsor/four-person play packages are $600.

All proceeds from the tournament go to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.

In the past four years, the tournament has raised more than $175,000.

Along with the tournament, several raffle prizes including a golf vacation for four, will be presented.

Fly casters fundraiser

The High Sierra Fly Casters annual fundraising dinner will be held April 21 at the CVIC Hall in Minden. A no-host bar begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.

Noted local fly tiers will be creating their specialty flies known for their success on local waters beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Food, prizes, raffles and a silent auction will be provided, along with music by Linda Sandstrom.

The grand prize will be a two-night stay at the Red Castle Inn in Nevada City, Calif.

Little League fundraiser

Carson Valley Little League will conduct its first fundraiser golf tournament April 21 at the Carson Valley Golf Course in Gardnerville.

Play begins at 9 a.m. and numerous prizes will be offered. Cost is $100 per person and all proceeds will go toward Little League baseball in the Valley.

"This is the first time we've ever tried something like this," said board member Mike Gamberg. "If it goes well, we'd like to make it an annual thing."

Carson Valley Little League will be looking for sponsors for holes and is seeking donations for prizes.

Adult softball sign-ups

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for summer adult softball for returning teams.

Registration deadline is April 22.

Cost is $650 per team for men's B and C and women's leagues and $410 for men's D and coed open.

The women's league plays on Monday and Wednesday nights, men's B plays on Tuesday and Thursday nights, men's C plays Monday and Wednesday nights, men's D plays on Tuesday nights and the coed open league plays on Friday nights.

The mandatory manager's meetings are scheduled for April 24 at 6 p.m. for women's and coed leagues and April 25 for men's.

Both meetings are held at the recreation annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

Community Choice awards coming up

Greater Nevada Credit Union will present the third annual MEFIYI Community Choice Youth Awards Banquet this year at Genoa Lakes Golf Club at 6 p.m., May 31.

The event honors outstanding youth of Douglas County from ages 9 to 18 in the combined areas of academic excellence (minimum 3.0 GPA), athletic committment (individual or team sports that include cheerleading, dance, martial arts and other competitive recreational activities) and community service.

Two Greater Nevada Credit Union $500 education scholarships will be awarded to outstanding senior male and female athletes.

The event is also supported by NFL Charities, the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, the E.L. Cord Foundaion, The Record-Courier and the Robert R. Banks Foundation.

Last year, 56 athletes were honored at the banquet, which drew an attendance of 240.

Fully-completed applications require two letters of recommendations for the athletic and community service requirements.

To fulfill the scholastic requirement, a copy of a recent school progress report or a report card will be needed.

AYSO Early Bird registration

Carson Valley AYSO will be taking soccer registration on the following dates:

April 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Scarselli Elementary School; May 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary School; May 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Douglas High School.

The league is open to boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old as of July 31, 2007.

Certified birth certificates must be presented for check-off at the time of registration for all players.

The season runs from the beginning of August through mid-October.

All U-16 and U-19 boys and girls will need to bring a small wallet-size picture.

Cost for registration before May 22 is $45 for U-5 players, $65 for one player, $120 for two players and $40 for each additional player.

Registration after May 22 will be $75 per player with no discounts.

CVI spring golf outing

The 18th annual Carson Valley Inn Spring Stag Golf Outing is April 26-29 at the two Genoa Lakes courses.

The Friday round will be at the Genoa Resort course and the Saturday round will be at the Genoa Lakes course.

The 36-hole scramble has proven to be a popular kick-off to the Northern Nevada golf season with players attending from throughout the West coast.

Players can come in teams of four or be teamed with others. Non-cash awards will be given to the top teams in each flight along with drawing prizes and closest-to-the-hole prizes.

Each participant also receives a souvenir tournament shirt and hat.

Adult baseball sign-ups

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will take registration through May 11.

This new wood bat league will comprise of a maximum of six teams with up to 25 players per team. Games will be played once a week on Sundays in the morning, afternoon or evening.

The season is scheduled to start May 20 and concludes in mid-August.

Players looking to get on a team are encouraged to call the recreation department to be put on a free agent list. Full payment is required at the time of registration.

All games will be played at Lampe Park on Field 1.

Cost is $950 per team for a 10-game season with a single-elimination tournament.

The mandatory manager's meeting is scheduled for May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Recreation Annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

Grace Christian Academy golf tournament

Grace Christian Academy, located on Heybourne Road in Minden, will conduct its first golf tournament fundraiser on May 12 at the Eagle Valley East Golf Course in Carson City.

Format for the tournament will be shotgun scramble.

Cost is $80 per player and $45 for juniors. Tournament, hole, player and prize sponsors are being sought. All donations, including the registration fee, are tax deductible.

Carson Valley Inn rafting trip

The Carson Valley Inn will offer an all-inclusive rafting outing package with a 20-mile float fown the Carson River June 2.

The trip includes Friday and Saturday night hotel accomodations, a continental breakfast, a pre-trip briefing Saturday morning, bus transportation to and from the river and a shoreline lunch.

Kids' Fishing Derby

The dates for the 18th annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Lampe Park have been set for June 2 and 3 at Lampe Park.

The fish for the derby are being raised at Mason Valley Hatchery and Lahontan Hatchery. Derby organizers will also be purchasing fish from American Trout & Salmon out of Susanville, Calif.

This year, the grand prize for the raffle drawing will be a Kuzuma Pro 90 ATV with gloves and a helmet. A Playstation 3 console, and a guided salmon trip from Success Fishing Guide along with many other prizes have been donated.

Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5 and can be purchased at Douglas County Parks & Recreation.

Organizers are in need of approximately 300-plus volunteers to help with the event.

More than 2,200 children are expected to participate in the derby this year, making it one of the largest free fishing derbies west of the Mississippi River.

Alonzo's Football Skillz Camp

Registrations will begin soon for Alonzo's Football Skillz Camp is scheduled for June 21 through June 24 at Lampe Park.

The camp will be open to 5- to 17-year-olds who would like to work on their athleticism and football skills.

Alonzo Hatchett, a former pro football player and current Pop Warner coach, will lead the camp. Velocity Sports Performance's Cheyenne Pietri, former Boise State standout and current VSP sports performance director in Reno, will instruct dynamic warm-up and speed/agility training.

Position-specific instructors include Gabe Hatchett, who is entering this year's NFL Draft, as well as current and former college and Douglas High School football players.

A current NFL player will be featured as a guest speaker during the camp.

Camp attendees will receive instruction in speed, agility, flexibility, strength and training in running, throwing, blocking, catching, tackling and defending.

Old Guys Basketball

Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.

After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.

Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from September to June.

Fall Ball in organizing stages

Carson Valley Little League is in the process of organizing a 2007 Fall Ball instructional baseball league.

The league would run from September to October for children ages 8 through 12.

The level of competition ranges anywhere from baseball purists, players preparing to move up a league or anyone hoping to work on specific aspects of their game.

The fee will be minimal for about a dozen games, a cap and a shirt.

Parks & Recreation looking for officials

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is looking for qualified officials for youth and adult sports in the following programs:

Youth basketball ($18 per game/Saturdays, January-March); Youth flag football ($14 per game/Saturdays, September-November); Youth volleyball ($16 per game/Saturdays, March-May); Adult volleyball ($18 per game/Monday-Thursday, fall, winter, spring); Adult basketball ($20 per game/Sundays, fall); Adult softball ($20 per game/Monday-Friday and tournaments, summer and fall); Adult flag football ($18 per game/Sundays, winter); Adult soccer ($30 per game/Sundays, spring); Adult baseball ($50 per game/Sundays, summer).

Officials must be willing to work nights and weekends and have a flexible schedule. Most games last approximately one hour. Training and certification will be provided by the recreation department and previous officiating experience is preferred. Willingness to be trained in multiple sports is also preferred.
