New owner takes over Minden gym

When new owner Kenny Lommori decided to take over ownership of World Gym in Minden, he listened to the members to find out what they would like to see in their gym.

Not long after, walls came down, paint applied, new carpet installed, equipment was updated and replaced.

"No more white walls," he said. "We're going to put some energy into this place."

There are new 42-inch plasma TVs, expanded aerobic classes, locker room upgrades and the spinning room has been doubled in size.

"Spinning is the most popular class, so I'm looking at putting more bikes in," he said.

There are 60 pieces of cardiovascular equipment - ellipticals, upright and recumbent bikes, stair steppers - with new treadmills on the way. There are 100 pieces of free-standing weight machines.

Rather than being an absentee landlord, Lommori is on site to listen to what members have to say.

"We want people to feel comfortable and not just take your dues and throw you in there. I like to listen to comments - good and bad - within reason," he said. "I'm doing the improvements the customers want."

He heard that cleanliness and customer service were very important issues. Lommori has hired a new cleaning crew and has personal trainers on duty who give new members evaluations and orientation.

"The evaluation is on body composition and nutrition is discussed," he said. "There's an orientation and demonstration on the machines, on what machine works what part."

Lommori gives himself six months to finish the expansions and improvements he wants to make - new cardio and weight machines, the completion of a juice bar with smoothies, protein and energy drinks, and fitness programs targeted for 12-18 year-olds.

"Kids' obesity is out of control right now," he said. "They need to get started with fitness early and to improve their diets. Some simple adjustments will do wonders. They could come in two to three times a week to learn the basics of exercise and nutrition."

World Gym sells supplements, weight-loss and muscle building products. Spinning and aerobics classes and the childcar service are included in the membership. Tanning is offered for an additional charge.

Lommori said people should take the time to improve their health with exercise and that everyone is welcome at the gym.

"We have people from 12 to 92," he said. "A 92-year-old gal works out every day."
