The second annual Sierra Lutheran High School Walkathon was held Saturday to celebrate anticipated construction of a permanent Christian high school in the Carson region. Children, teenagers and adults walked around a 1-mile loop at the future site to draw attention to the new school and to generate revenue for Christian education at several participating schools.
To date, participants have collected $7,200 from the walkathon for the school, but pledges are still coming in. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is supplementing funds raised.
Sierra Lutheran High School, located in temporary quarters in Minden, plans to break ground for its new facility within the next year. Phase I construction plans call for classrooms that will serve 125 students in grades 9-12. Also included in the initial construction will be a full-sized gymnasium, science and computer laboratories, art room, stage, administrative offices, food service and commons areas, athletic fields and other features that would meet the needs of a future student body of up to 600 students. Once this core facility is built, additional classroom wings will be added as the high school grows.
A 38-acre parcel of land on North Sunridge Drive in Carson City (immediately east of Hilltop Community Church) will become the new home of Sierra Lutheran High School.
Joining those who attend and support Sierra Lutheran High School were students, staff and supporters of Grace Christian Academy, Trinity Lutheran Preschool and many area churches.
Providing a Christ-centered college preparatory education to teenagers of all faiths, Sierra Lutheran High School has experienced an annual average of 32 percent enrollment growth during its first four years of operation. For more information call 782-0060.
