This Saturday, 8 a.m., the Antelope Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization is holding their annual pancake breakfast and bazaar in the school's gym. The last time I went, they put on a really good breakfast for this fundraiser.
In addition, the bazaar has many local vendors, both crafts and businesses, as well as the very creatively themed baskets made by each of the school's classes, that will be raffled. The bazaar will run until 2 p.m.
Friends of the Library
There will be a club meeting today 4 p.m. at the Coleville Library to finalize plans for their book sale at the PTO bazaar Saturday. There will be so many really great books to select from at such low prices that, if you're a reader, it's not to be missed.
Military training
We have learned that the U.S. Army 6th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment from Ft. Campbell, Ky., will be holding training exercises in Little Antelope Valley from May 30 to June 9, simulating Afghanistan war conditions. There will be more than 200 soldiers and 15 helicopters involved in the operations, which will take place both day and night. I will report more on this after I get the answers to some very important questions for our valley, such as fire prevention/protection and other issues. Just wanted to let you know what's on the drawing board.
RPAC
The monthly Regional Planning Advisory Committee meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday at the Walker Community Center. As always, the public is invited to attend, become aware, and get involved in the future of the Antelope Valley.
This and that
-- There have been two happy occasions recently for very special members of our valley community:
Baldo Giorgi and Sandy Baetge were married in Bishop on April 21 with a sizeable crowd attending. Many of Baldo's friends from Lions Club as well as others from the area attended and said it was a great occasion. Congratulations to the newlyweds.
Dale Abbott's 90th birthday was celebrated after services at the Antelope Valley United Methodist Church on April 22. Dale has lived in the valley for around 40 years and been active here, most notably through his involvement at the church. Everyone who knows him appreciates his efforts on behalf of our community. A belated happy birthday, Dale.
-- The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Carbo-Load spaghetti dinner 6 p.m. May 18 at the Walker Community Center. The cost is $5 per dinner. Runners participating in the next day's Mountain Warfare Challenge race will be given free dinners by showing their race ID. Reservations are needed, which can be made by calling the Chamber of Commerce at (530) 495-9666.
-- The opening day for fishing in the Walker River was not as good as had been expected. The day before the season opened, the river was absolutely pristine and perfect. Then the weather got very warm Friday, and a lot of runoff from melting snow at higher elevations came down and ended up muddying the river and cutting back on angling success. It should be better again pretty soon, so don't give up.
-- This Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be an open house at the Walker Thrift Store to meet the staff and see what great bargains they have available. Light refreshments will be served.
