John H. Hellwinkel

1922-2007

A private family service was held for Gardnerville native John H. Hellwinkel, 84, who died April 22, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Reno.

Mr. Hellwinkel was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Gardnerville. He served in the European Theater with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He was a technician fifth grade in the 900th Field Battalion and received the American Theater of Operation Service ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Service ribbon, good conduct medal and victory medal. He was a farmer who also mined and was a heavy equipment operator.

He is survived by his wife Edna; children Dennis of Yerington, Darlene Kincade of Malta, Idaho, David of Smith Valley, Debbie Lundergreen of Richfield, Idaho, Deanna Rumford of Morro Bay, Calif., and Dale of Shoshone, Idaho; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren a sister and three brothers.

Mr. Hellwinkel was buried with military honors at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fenley, which was attended by former military personnel.

Rose Marie Borda McAllister

1921-2007

A memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville for Carson Valley native Rose Marie Borda McAllister, 85, who died April 27, 2007.

Mrs. McAllister was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Gardnerville to John Baptiste and Augustine Borda. She was a graduate of Douglas County High School. She married her high school sweetheart, George McAllister and the couple shared 60 years together. Mrs. McAllister worked for 30 years as the secretary for the Soil Conservation Service.

She was proud to be a member of St. Gall Catholic Community. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking, spending time with her family and her dachshunds.

She always had a warm smile and a kind word.

Mrs. McAllister was preceded in death by her parents, John Baptiste and Augustine Borda, her husband George McAllister and her brother Ray Borda.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia Shake and husband Fred; son Mike McAllister and Carla Wetzel; grandchildren, Rick Canatsey and fiancé Vicki Dalton, Robert Canatsey, Christy Canatsey-Malarchuk, Michelle Hanson and husband Steve, Tara Lannom and husband Mike, Michael McAllister and wife Michelle, Ryan Wetzel and wife Katrina, Erin Davidson and husband Jeremy, Bonnie Smith and husband Kelly and Lena Resick; great-grandchildren, Tiana McAllister-Daggs, Josilyn Daggs, Troy Lannom, Brandi Keenan, Brandon Dalton, Dallyn Malarchuk, James and Grace Hanson, Spencer and Cameron Davidson, Anna Wetzel, Austin and Beau Smith, Kasey and Drew Resick and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

The family asks in lieu of flowers a donation be made in Rose McAllister's name to Alzheimer's Association Northern Nevada Chapter, 705 South Wells Ave. Reno, Nevada.

Craig Allen Smith

1953-2007

A memorial will be in Binghamton, N.Y., for Craig Allen Smith, 53, who died April 21, 2007, at his home in Topaz Ranch Estates.

Mr. Smith was born June 7, 1953, to Jack Pershing and Mildred Elizabeth Coo Smith in Binghamton.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army for 21 years where he saw action in Vietnam, receiving a Purple Heart and a distinguished service medal.

He received a masters degree and worked as a teacher and jewelry artist.

Mr. Smith married Debi Lynn Brown on March 27, 2002, in Gallup, N.M. He lived in Topaz Ranch Estates for one year, having moved from Bridgeport.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father.

He is survived by his wife, Debi Lynn; stepson David Roy Vulyak of Bridgeport; father-in-law, Roy Brown of Topaz Ranch Estates; sisters Kathleen of New Jersey and Coleen of Connecticut; brothers Mark of New York, Rich of Illinois and Harry of Colorado; niece Vivian Faye and aunt Lula Straton.

Cremation will take place at FitzHenry's Crematory and inurnment in Binghamton, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, the Earth Day Foundation, Mono Lake and Adopt-A-Soldier. FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
