Douglas County residents are invited to participate in a "mock caucus" Thursday, August 9th, as part of a statewide effort by the Nevada Democratic Party to educate Nevadans on the Jan. 19 presidential caucuses.
"Nevadans will have an exciting and historic opportunity to support new leadership and change the course of our country by participating in their caucuses," said Kirsten Searer, deputy executive director of the Nevada Democratic Party. "On Saturday, Jan. 19th, the eyes of the nation will be on Nevada."
Nevada has held caucuses for decades, but this is the first time the Nevada caucuses will be the second in the nation - after the Jan. 14 Iowa caucuses and early enough to have a major impact on the next Democratic presidential nominee.
The Nevada Democratic Party will hold "mockuses" - mock caucuses - around the state through Jan. 19 to help educate Nevadans on the caucus process, which is different than a primary. In each "mockus," participants will caucus for their favorite type of pizza, instead of their favorite presidential candidate. Each mockus is open to the media and to the general public.
Successful mock caucuses have been recently held in other rural areas, including Carson City, Fernley, Zephyr Cove, Pahrump, Ely, Eureka, Winnemucca, Elko and Alamo.
