Good soldiers in the fight against cancer

What price do the residents of Carson Valley place on the battle against cancer?

The answer is easy, $100,633.70.

That's how much Relay for Life raised as of Tuesday. The total may still rise as online donations are added up.

It took 45 registered relay teams and about 850 people to raise the money. They held bake sales, garage sales and participated in many activities such as bowling, car washing, singing and playing poker to do the job.

To put it all in perspective, participants raised $84,000 last year. That means a 20 percent increase in money to help find a cure for cancer.

Why do they do it?

James Lamb Jr., whose story appears on the front page of Wednesday's edition is one reason. Justin Stegemann is another. Anyone who read about either young man was touched by the tragedy that is cancer. Every cancer patient or survivor has a story to tell that illustrates the need to defeat and comfort those stricken by this disease.

The Valley residents who've given of themselves to support this worthy cause deserve the thanks of the entire community.

Our best wishes are with the participants and those they help.
