The Sustainable Living & Renewable Energy Roundup kicks off 6 p.m. at Minden Elementary School with four speakers. The roundup then moves down Buckeye to Bently's Ferris Park and to the Western Nevada College campus where displays, talks and movies will be going on during the weekend. See today's edition of The R-C for a sample of what's going on.
I've yet to find a source for that big smoke cloud that drifted into the Valley at about 7 p.m. Thursday. It looked pretty brown to just be a cloud. I suppose it could have been drift smoke from the Zaca fire burning near Santa Barbara. Instead, I'll just accept that nothing near here appears to be on fire and be happy.
The day when temperatures crack the 90s has been delayed once more, with the high today expected to hit 89 and Saturday's high actually a degree lower. Skies are clear and the temps will warm back up next week, according to the National Weather Service.
It is unlikely that the water situation is going to change in these last two months of the water year, as both August and September are typically very dry months. Through July the Carson Valley received 3.82 inches of moisture (specifically Gardnerville). During a typical year, we get 8.38 inches of moisture. Stream flows on the Carson River are trickling down to 0. One good thing, the rabbit brush seems to have been slowed down by the dry year. I only see a few plants blooming, but nothing spectacular. The bad news is no moisture means nothing to wash the dust and pollen out of the air.
