When it comes down to it, things really couldn't have gone much better for the Douglas High School girls' basketball program during its voluntary summer schedule.

"It went really well this last summer," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "It was probably the most fun we have had during a summer session. The kids had a good time, they played hard and we learned a lot about ourselves."

Douglas won an impressive 14 out of its last 15 games on its way to a 20-8 record overall for the summer. The Lady Tigers beat a number of strong California programs along the way, including El Camino out of Sacramento.

"We were extremely happy with the team's progress overall, but we were especially happy with how our backcourt progressed," Christen said. "Defensively, they really stepped things up and that will allow us to do a lot of exciting things when the season comes around."

Christen, Andy Hughes, Dave Pfaffenberger and Rosie Contri handled the coaching duties during the offseason.
