Walker community asked to discuss highway changes with Caltrans

From 4-7 p.m. Wed. Aug. 29, Caltrans is holding a public meeting at Walker Community Center to discuss proposed changes to Highway 395. The changes would take place almost one mile north of Highway 89 to approximately one mile south of the California-Nevada border. Their intent as stated in their notice is to straighten the curves and level the dips in that section of the highway. Since that route is so important to our community, we should go and hear what they are proposing and the effect it would have on us. For further information about their study, call Cedrik at (760) 872-5250.

Another person saved

Last week the Antelope Valley Fire Department responded to a tractor-trailer accident on Highway 89, about a mile west of Highway 395. The vehicle had left the roadway and traveled about 160 feet over the side and landed upside down, with the driver pinned under the tractor. Our fire department personnel were able to lift the vehicle and extricate the driver. As of a few days ago, he was in good condition, except for some very bad leg injuries. Good job, AVFD.

This and that

-- The Antelope Valley Fire Department has placed two of their older vehicles up for sealed bid. They are a 1988 Dodge Ram 4x4 Charger and a 1965 International rescue vehicle. They are available for inspection at 106979 Highway 395 (Nay-Dawg's parking lot). Please contact the fire department at (530) 495-1200 for details of the bid procedure.

-- Through a generous grant received by the Mono County Friends of the Library, our Coleville library has a good selection of large-print books, as well as large-print books for children. Check them out.

-- There was another trout plant on the West Walker River Aug. 9, and there will be at least one more plant this season. Try your luck on the river, because there are some big ones out there waiting.

-- Coleville High School football and volleyball seasons begin Sat., Aug. 25 at the school, against Round Mountain. Volleyball will be at 11 a.m., with football at 1 p.m.

-- The Walker Thrift Store has just had new carpeting installed and is looking good. Stop by and shop the many bargains available.

Due to this column's deadline, next week I'll give you details from last night's town hall meeting about the use of Nevada mortuaries.
