Hurricanes fall tryouts
The Carson Valley Hurricanes softball organization will conduct tryouts at the Douglas varsity field Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Aug. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The tryouts will be for the fall season and players from 13 to 18 as of Jan. 1, 2007 are welcome.
There is no cost or obligation to try out.

Pau-Wa-Lu open gyms
Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School will conduct open gyms Aug. 20 through 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the school gym in preparation for the upcoming girls' basketball season.
The sessions are voluntary and are open to any seventh- or eighth-grade girls interested in trying out for basketball.
Tryouts will be Aug. 29 and 30.
Anyone interested in trying out for the team must have a current physical (no more than a year old).
CVMS girls' basketball tryouts
Open gym workouts for the Carson Valley Middle School girls' basketball team will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from Aug. 15 to Aug. 28. at the middle school from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Tryouts are Aug. 29 and 30 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the gym.
Attendance is expected for both days of tryouts and students should practice in appropriate gym clothes.
A medical physical exam (completed within the last calendar year) and proof of medical insurance is required.
Returning eighth-graders who participated in a CVMS sport last year and had a physical done do not need a new one.
All interested students should pick up an athletic packet in the front office at CVMS. Only the last 15 minutes of each tryout are open to parents.

Kirkwood 5K/10K run
The 27th annual Kirkwood 5K/10K Run will be Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. The event kicks off with a one-mile and half-mile fun run for kids, with the 5K and 10K runs starting directly after.
The Tahoe Mountain Milers and Sagebrush Stompers Running Club and the Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Youth flag football sign-ups open
The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for the NFL Youth Flag Football League.
Players receive a reversible NFL flag jersey, mouthpiece and individual trophy.
All games will be played on Saturdays at Stodick Park.
Participants will be divided into four age groups (5-6 coed, 7-8 coed, 9-11 coed and 12-14 coed).
Players must be at least six and not 15 by Sept. 1.
Coaches will randomly choose teams through a draft system. Volunteer coaches and sponsors are needed.
Registration is being accepted until Aug. 31 and the games will begin Sept. 22.
