A variance request for the Valley Bar is before the Douglas County Planning Commission today. Bar supporters are hoping the planning commission will let them cut the number of parking spaces required from 23 to 10. Should the request be successful, a shovel party is in the works for Saturday to being reconstruction of the Carson Valley landmark, located at Highway 88 and Centerville.

Douglas County School Board trustees meet 3:30 p.m. today at Douglas High School in Minden. For some reason an audit on Sierra Crest Academy is under consent items, which means it will be voted upon without comment unless someone pulls it. Also on the agenda is the creation of an alternative school for expelled students that combines online and direct instruction. The school board is being asked to create a teacher assistant position for the school.

The woman accused of breaking into several strip malls is scheduled to appear in district court today for arraignment. Former security guard Patricia Medel, 45, was arrested June 14 after a video tape of her passing by a Gardnerville bank was shot at the time of a break-in of a restaurant in the same mall. She is expected to admit to attempted burglary in district court this morning.

The pall cast over the Valley by California fires should dissipate at about 1 p.m. today as the winds pick up and blow a ridge of high pressure out of the area. There's a slight chance of thunderstorms in the forecast today and again on Wednesday. Then the temperatures cool off for a bit.
